Geography
The Geography Department is housed on the top floor of the Mathematics/Geography block. There are four teaching rooms, a resources room, a departmental library and an office. A total of six staff teach in the department under the leadership of Head of Geography Mr. Andy Palmer.
Geography is a compulsory subject in the Lower School and an option at GCSE and A level. In recent years the numbers choosing the subject have grown steadily and in 2008 there were 95 pupils sitting GCSE and 65 taking AS level examinations, making Geography the second largest option.
Examination results have been impressive with A level pass rates being 100% for the last nine years and over 50% of pupils gaining A grades in 2009. GCSE results have also been excellent with over 70% of pupils gaining A*/A grades in each of the last four years.
The Department has a strong belief in the value of fieldwork and all year groups undertake trips and outdoor activities as part of their studies. In addition there are optional foreign trips, to Provence for GCSE students and Iceland for those taking A level. The Geography Society, led by a committee from the Sixth Form, is very active and organises a number of events including internal and inter-school quizzes and visiting lecturers.
