Mathematics
The Mathematics Department, comprising eleven members of staff, is one of the busiest academic faculties at Dauntsey's. We aim to develop and stimulate students' curiosity and enjoyment of the subject and allow them to develop a familiarity with appropriate concepts, principles, methods and vocabulary.
Mathematics is compulsory throughout the main school, with pupils allocated to sets according to ability, and all pupils are expected to pass the higher level IGCSE in the 5th Form. In addition, more than half of our Sixth Form chose to study Mathematics at A/AS level, with a good number also taking Further Mathematics. The Department is proud of its examination results and in the last three years, 70% of pupils taking Mathematics have obtained ‘A’ grades at A Level. Pupils have also been successfully prepared to study Mathematics, or related subjects, at Oxford or Cambridge.
In addition to the academic curriculum, there are a variety of extra-curricular activities and events. The UKMT Mathematics Challenges are run at every level throughout the school and we also enter the team competitions with a good degree of success. Trips range from our annual Techniquest visit to Cardiff for the First Form through to lectures for the Sixth Form mathematicians.
