Drama at Dauntsey's
Drama is thriving at Dauntsey's and there are numerous opportunities to be involved either on stage or behind the scenes. Over the academic year pupils put on some six or seven productions, ranging from small studio pieces to full stage shows and musicals. The School has become well known for the high standard of its productions, all of which are open to the public and recent showcase successes include; Tristan and Yseult, Peter Pan and Cabaret. In recent years Dauntsey's has premiered a number of West End musicals including Les Miserables, The Witches of Eastwick, Evita, Chicago, Spamalot and in December 2011 the School was granted permission to perform Miss Saigon.
The Memorial Hall, with its sophisticated sound and lighting system can seat up to 500 people and is the chosen venue for major productions such as the December Musical and annual Lower School Production. The setting for many lessons, workshops, smaller-scale productions and much pupil-directed drama is Annabel's Studio, an entirely flexible "black box". In addition, pupils now have the use of Venue 2, the latest drama facility whichserves as a teaching space, rehearsal room and smallperformance venue.
Drama forms part of the curriculum for all First, Second and Third Form pupils and Drama GCSE is a popular option as the syllabus offers a good balance of practical and text based work. Theatre Studies is offered at AS and A2 and provides the opportunity for pupils to continue from their GCSE studiesor start from scratch.
For those not choosing to study drama for public examination, this vibrant area of school life affords numerous opportunities for all pupils to perform, design and direct in the many productions that take place during the school year. Extra-curricular activities offered by the drama department include; scenery design, dance classes, theatrical productions, sound, make-up, stage management and stage lighting.
