International Students - Fluency in English

In order to cope with both the academic and social demands of being at Dauntsey's, pupils whose first language is not English should have good spoken and written English. Ability in written English is tested as part of the entrance selection process and guidelines are given below. In addition, each pupil will be interviewed by an appropriate senior member of the academic staff during which their spoken English will be assessed.

Guidelines for admissions and ability levels in English

Third Form, 13+ (Year 9). Pupils must be fluent in English and should have the equivalent of a pass at the Cambridge University PET. This is evidenced either through the PET certificate or through our own EAL paper which can be taken (together with the appropriate Maths paper either at Dauntsey's in February of the year of entry (following successful pre-selection) or at the offices of one of our recognised agents. All pupils are interviewed either by the Head Master, Director of Studies or Head of the Lower School. If places remain after this process, we will test and interview candidates by arrangement.

At all stages of entry, it is advisable to apply at the correct time in order to maximise the chance of success. Waiting lists operate at all three points of entry to the School.

At all stages, pupils receive the appropriate level of individual support from experienced EAL teaching staff. Sixth Form students are prepared for the IELTS examination where level 7 is required for entrance to top UK universities.
