Mr R G Handover CBE (Chairman)

Career in retailing, distribution and logistics, culminating in Chief Executive of the WH Smith Group, and subsequently Chairman. Other interests include non-executive directorships of Royal Mail Group PLC,Chairman of the Alexon Group PLC. I was also a Non Executive Director of Nationwide Building Society and Chairman of the Adult Learning Inspectorate. I also have interests in other charitable works including Vice Chairman of Kids Company and Chairman of the Community Foundation for Swindon and Wiltshire. My interests also include golf, art, music and the Greek Islands, and my 3 children have all benefited from the Dauntsey's experience.

R Bernard
 

Mr R M Bernard CBE

I joined as a Governor of Dauntsey's School in 2005 and as well as sitting on the Full Board I am also a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee. I think Dauntsey's is a wonderful school and have a keen personal interest in its development as all four of my children have attended the school over the years.

I am Chairman of Classic FM, Britain's largest commercial radio station and The Central School of Ballet. I am a keen five-a-side footballer and will compete in my seventh London Marathon in April 2009. In quieter moments I collect copies of Wisden, the cricketing year book.

I am married with four daughters and live in Marlborough.

Mrs S H Courth (Vice-Chairman)

I taught science in England until my marriage, then spent the next 25 years living in seven different countries and teaching business English. We have three children in their 20's all educated in the U.K. Now back permanently in England doing voluntary work with young offenders and learning Italian.

Mr Angus Dudgeon

Career in sales, customer service and project management in the motor industry and business to business sales. Culminating in becoming self employed consultant to start up companies, building industry and food manufacture and wholesale. I am a Liveryman of the Mercers' Company and have served on their Education Committee and Educational Trust Charity. My interests include golf, skiing and rugby (armchair expert) and travel. I have two children.

Mrs P L P Floyer-Acland

Educated at St. Paul's Girls' School and Edinburgh University where I gained a B.Sc in Social Sciences. I trained as a Probation Officer and worked as such for 20 years in London and Gloucestershire, until leaving the Service in 1996. I am on the Independent Monitoring Board at Leyhill Open Prison and a Governor of the Barnwood Trust, which gives grants to mentally and physically disabled people in Gloucestershire. I am a member of the Mercers' Company. Married with one son (19), I am currently taking a 2 year Foundation Degree in Art at Stroud College.

Professor L M Harwood

I have been a Governor of Dauntsey's School since 1987 and serve on the Estates and Assets Committee. Since 1996 I have been Head of Organic Chemistry at Reading University where my work revolves around the development of new synthetic methods and their application to the synthesis of natural products. I hold various editorial appointments and I have published over 100 refereed research papers, 3 patents and authored or co-authored 4 textbooks

Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Johns

I joined the RAF in 1957 straight from school. A fighter pilot by trade I retired in 2000 as Chief of the Air Staff, the professional head of the Service. The Queen then appointed me Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle where I served until 2008. I now live in Wiltshire. Appointed Governor in 2008.

Mr Peter Lane

Career in private wealth management, currently with Rothschild Private Bank and Trust and previously with Laing and Cruickshank and Midland Bank (now HSBC). Educated at Sherborne School and College of William & Mary in Virginia, USA with a degree in English.

Numeracy and literacy partner in Bow School in Tower Hamlets. Nominated for Lord Mayor's Dragon Awards for contribution to community and education projects. Member of Mercers Company, serving on the Education and Charity Committees.

Member of MCC. My hobbies include cricket, the theatre and travelling.

Married with 3 children.

Mr M J H Liversidge

I have been a Governor of Dauntsey's since 1995 and currently serve on the Estates Infrastructure and Assets Committee. I worked in higher education from 1970 to 2008, teaching art history at the University of Bristol where I was Dean of the Faculty of Arts (1996-2001) and Head of Department for twenty-one years, and I am now Emeritus Dean of Arts. I have a particular interest in how learning and teaching in schools, universities and colleges are responding to the rapidly changing educational environment and intersect with the developing knowledge economy of the future. Outside my university work I have been a Trustee of the Theatre Royal in Bristol, and I was a member of the Campaign Board for the Children's Hospice South West project to build the recently opened Charlton farm Children's Hospice near Bristol. As well as Dauntsey's, I am currently a Governor of the British Institute of Florence.

 Mr Charles Lucas

I have lived and worked in Central Wiltshire for most of my working life as a Rural practice Chartered Surveyor and auctioneer. I was delighted to be invited to join the Board as an Old Dauntseian Governor and to join the Estates and Assets committee. I currently live in the Vale of Pewsey about 8 miles from the school, with my wife Jo. We have 4 children all of whom have been educated at Dauntseys being third generation Dauntseians as my father was also a pupil in the mid 30’s. My outside interests revolve around family, sport (watching these days rather than playing!) and country pursuits in the winter with my poorly (self) trained labrador.

Mr A S Macpherson

I am one of the two Old Dauntseian representatives on the Governing body and was first appointed in 1999. I am currently Chairman of the Estates Committee, and also serve on the Finance and General Purposes and Audit Committees. I am a Chartered Accountant "by trade", and act as an itinerant Finance Director to several companies in the Swindon area. I am a magistrate on the Swindon Bench and a member of Wiltshire Police Authority. I am a trustee of two charities working for the street homeless in Swindon and of the Community Foundation for Wiltshire and Swindon. In the City, I am a member of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers and a past Master of the Guild of Mercers Scholars. I'm married to Sara Jane and have two adult children. My hobbies include singing, gardening and watercolours.

Mr R P Matters

I live 10 minutes walk from the School and have been a Governor for 9 years, serving on the Estates, Audit & Risk and HR Committees. My responsibilities include informing the Parish Council of developments within the School that may impact on the local community, and also keeping the School informed of developments within the village. Having retired from the Army in late 2005 I now run a bookshop in Devizes called Reading Matters. I involve myself with many activities at School, especially in the outdoor pursuits field and am the governor linked with the school environmental pressure group, the Big Green Thing. I live in the village and my wife Bonny, is the Manageress of the School Shop. We have 4 children of whom 3 are working and one, who greatly enjoyed her time at Dauntsey's, is a student nurse.

Dr Rachel Quarrell

Part-scientist and part-journalist, I spend half my time as a lecturer in organic chemistry at the University of Oxford, and the other half as a freelance sports writer. I was educated at Bryanston School and then St John's College Oxford, gaining my doctorate in 1994 and spending ten years in medicinal chemistry research before shifting the balance more towards teaching. I am the rowing correspondent for the Daily and Sunday Telegraphs, an official timekeeper for the University Boat Race, and run various events, websites and online publications involving sport. I also organise the Oxford Cafe Scientifique, and most of my interests revolve around science, sport, the literary and dramatic arts, and education.

Brigadier P P Rawlins

I have been a Governor since 2007 and serve on the Assets and Estates Committee and the Finance and General Purposes Committee. After 32 years in the Army I was Clerk to the Grocers' Company in the City for eight years and am now retired and living in Little Cheverell, just half a mile from the School. My interests revolve around bird watching, fly fishing and gardening, which sadly take up less of my time than all the other responsibilities that seem as a matter of course to fall to retired folk living in small villages.

Mr J A Rendell

I have been a Governor of Dauntsey's School for 11 years. I am a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee and Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee. I am an OD (1964-71), live locally, am Chairman of the Mill School in Potterne, a Director of a company in Newbury, a Trustee of the Community Foundation for Wiltshire and Swindon, and Chairman of the Pick's Diocese Support Group. My son Guy (1996-2003) and my daughter Charlotte (2000-2007) were at Dauntsey's.

Brigadier M S Rutter-Jerome

I have been a Governor at Dauntsey's School since 2004 and serve on the Finance and General Purposes Committee and the Future Planning Group. After 30 years in the Army, I was the Bursar and Clerk to the Governors at Cranleigh School for 7 years and until 2009 I ran the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools, providing support, advice and training for Governors. I live at the South East corner of Salisbury Plain, enjoy fly fishing and training springer spaniels and I seem to collect old cars.

Mr Bill Scarborough

I am a Mercer appointed Governor, having been Master of the Mercers’ Company 2009/10. Currently, I am Chairman of the Mercers’ Company property board.

My career has been entirely in Commercial Real Estate, formerly Director High Street Retail, CB Hillier Parker, prior to now managing a Private Investment/Development Company.

Educated at Dauntsey’s and married with two daughters and a son.

My interests include golf and sailing.

Mr N W Smith

I was educated at Plymouth College and then read Agriculture at Bicton College followed by 12 months running a farm in Zimbabwe. I have spend most of my career in property and now own and run a property and financial services business in Winchester. I became a freeman of the Mercers’ Company in 1988 and have served on the Estates Committee and as a Governor of Peter Symonds College. I am married to my wife Lisa and between us we have 15 godchildren! We live near Winchester and during the summer I play far too much cricket and we both fish. I was delighted to be asked to become a Governor of Dauntsey’s.

Mrs L F Walsh Waring

Educated at Queenswood and St. Paul’s Girls’ School, followed by a Geography degree from Manchester University. Subsequent qualification as a solicitor and practised in London, specialising in company and commercial law. Currently a full time mother. A member of The Mercers' Company and serving as a Mercers’ nominated governor on the board of Dauntsey's. Joined the governing Body in 2006 and sit on the Estates and Assets, and Human Resources Committees.

Mr C E Whittington

I was educated at Radley College and then read History at Edinburgh University followed by Law at the College of Law in London and Guildford. I am now a solicitor specialising in property law. I became a freeman of the Mercers' Company in 2009 and in the same year I was appointed a Governor of Dauntsey's School. I am married with one son and live near Andover in Hampshire. During the summer I am a keen polo player at Tidworth Polo Club in Wiltshire and enjoy training young horses to play. During the winter I enjoy walking our dog and skiing.
