Chemistry

A brief description of the course followed in Years 7 and 8.

In years 7 and 8 the pupils study Chemistry for one double period a week.  The aim is to introduce pupils to the laboratory and basic practical techniques as well as introducing some fundamental skills and investigational techniques.  The course is based on extensive practical work and also aims to develop an interest in and enthusiasm for Chemistry.  It is based on the National Curriculum for Science and the Common Entrance Syllabus.

  • Separation Techniques  – Distillation and Chromatography
  • Changes of State
  • Water Cycle and Water Treatment
  • The Air
  • Oxygen, Oxides and Combustion
  • The Fire Triangle
  • Rusting
  • Physical and Chemical Change

Year 8 Content

  • Acids and Alkalis
  • Periodic Table (Introduction)
  • Research Project – Elements
  • Reactivity Series of Metals
  • Particles and Changes of State
  • Fuels and Oxidation
  • Rocks and Rock Formation
  • Extension work on Electrolysis
