Music

A brief description of the course followed in Years 7 and 8.

The Music Department aims to offer all pupils the opportunity to develop fully their musical potential whether as performers, composers or informed listeners.  To this end, class music lessons in the Lower School explore a wide variety of music, through listening, composing and performing, as well as singing, aural and theory work.

Individual instrumental tuition is available on all orchestral instruments, piano, guitar and singing; and in the first year, all pupils not already learning an instrument are offered a series of trial lessons on string, woodwind or brass instruments as part of their class music lessons.

A wide variety of musical activities, such as choirs, orchestras and wind bands, a dance band, and several chamber groups meet regularly to rehearse.  Pupils are encouraged to participate in appropriate ensembles, based upon age, experience and technical ability, and throughout the year all these groups are involved in regular concerts to which parents are warmly invited.
