Personal and Social Education

A brief description of the course followed in Years 7 and 8.

All pupils in Years 7 and 8 have one timetabled period per week of Personal and Social Education.  This is where ‘the other 3Rs’ are explored in more depth.  They are Respect and Responsibility for themselves and other people and Relationships.  Learning is experiential rather than didactic and free expression of views is encouraged. This may be in the form of small group or whole class discussions, to role-play or presentations after independent research.  There is also opportunity for the class to bring their own ideas for debate.

A variety of topics will be covered under these broad headings:

  • Learning about Yourself, Your Family and Friends
  • Valuing and caring for Yourself, Others and the Environment
  • During the year all pupils receive Sex and Drug Education

The aim is to help develop self-confidence, foster empathy and encourage an appreciation of individual and collective rights and responsibilities.
