Religious Studies

A brief description of the course followed in Years 7 and 8.

The aim of the Religious Studies Department in Years 7 and 8 is to give the pupils an introduction to the beliefs and practices of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, with the emphasis on Christianity, reflecting the School’s ethos and the background of the majority of the pupils.

The RS syllabus in Year 7 consists of an introduction to religion and belief in God and a consideration of some of the key religious themes of the Judaeo-Christian tradition found in the Bible.  It explores the main events in the life of Jesus and his most important teachings.  It then looks at the nature and diversity of the Christian Church today and concludes with a study of Judaism. The Year 8 course considers the significance of the person of Jesus, both as a historical figure and as the central figure of the Christian faith, and then examines different aspects of Christian life and worship in practice. Pupils are then introduced to some Philosophy of Religion and conclude with a study of Islam.  Both courses aim to provide a firm foundation for the study of important contemporary issues and other world faiths in future years.

A further aim of the course is to enable pupils to begin to develop a series of skills: the ability to reflect on ultimate questions, beliefs and practices; to consider the thoughts, feelings, experiences, attitudes, beliefs and values of others; to see the world through the eyes of another; and to debate issues of religious significance with reference to evidence and argument. Thus we seek to help pupils to learn to listen and think for themselves, ask their own questions and express their own views, as well as to develop respect for one another, which will, we hope, contribute to their overall personal and spiritual development.
