German

A brief description of the course followed in Year 9.

German continues as a language option in year 9 as one of the foreign languages available, from which two can be continued.

As the roots of the English language are Germanic, the continued study of German undoubtedly has a positive spin-off of our own language, particularly the more difficult language of Chaucer and Shakespeare which will be encountered further up the school as part of the English curriculum. In addition to this, increasingly nowadays there are opportunities for students in a wide range of fields, for example Business Studies and Engineering, to spend a year in Germany as a part of their undergraduate programme, and a working knowledge of German is very useful under these circumstances. Those who have enjoyed German in year 8 and who have coped reasonably well with it are this encouraged to continue with their studies.

In year 9 the approach remains essentially communicative, but more formal grammar is introduced with tenses other than the present, specifically the perfect and the future tenses.  Written skills will also be developed as the year progresses, and at the end of the year pupils should be able to write simply about holidays and other tourist activities.  Topics covered will include: food – eating with families, snacks, cafés and restaurants; tourism – hotel, camping and youth hostel accommodation; Germany and Austria as holiday destinations (the North Sea coast, the Alps, the Black Forest, Salzburg); places of interest in one’s own area; shopping in a department store for clothes and accessories, and expressing opinions about films and TV programmes.  The GCSE core content vocabulary is the framework for the topics covered, and so pupils will have a good head start if they choose German as a GCSE option at the end of the year.  Equally, those who decide not to continue with German will be well equipped to cope with a variety of survival situations and sustain short conversations during a visit to a German-speaking country.
