The 3rd Form History syllabus is intended to build on the foundations laid in Years 1 and 2 in terms of handling source evidence, structuring arguments, using factual material in the service of opinion, understanding issues of causation and consequence, and developing independence and initiative in investigating the past. The syllabus is focused solely on the Twentieth Century, and uses case studies to investigate the key themes of modern history. A depth study of World War I, and the Western Front in particular, challenges students to understand the changing nature of warfare and the emergence of total war in the modern world. An investigation of the USA between the wars charts the rise of a superpower. The study of World War II provides opportunities to look at propaganda, the morality of bombing, the balance of military power and basic historical investigation. The year ends with an investigation of the historical roots of the Arab-Israeli problem and the production of a piece of coursework on Nazi anti-Semitism. Two pieces of coursework are designed to encourage independence of research and thought. The first is a three-week piece examining the nature of the fighting on the Western Front, and the second is a four-week investigation of the evolution of anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany. This is supported by a visit to the Imperial War Museum’s acclaimed Holocaust Exhibition. The 3rd Form course is designed to be enjoyable, challenging, relevant to issues in the modern world, and a vehicle by which to develop the skills central to success in studying History at higher levels. It is delivered through a wide range of teaching and learning activities, and provides historical context for the GCSE course.
