Information Technology

A brief description of the course followed in Year 9.

In the third form pupils have one lesson per week in Information & Communication Technology.   During these lessons pupils are encouraged to build upon the foundations laid in the first and second forms, by continuing to use the major software packages in word processing, DTP, spreadsheets, databases and graphics.   The main focus of the work is on the use simulations and information handling.

The course comprises:

  • An introduction to the school network and procedures to introduce students new to the school to our system and to consolidate and extend understanding for pupils coming up through the school.   The use of network facilities is important for sharing information and facilitating co-operative project work.
  • Simulations: Pupils look at and analyse the use of a number of simple models before conducting an in depth investigation of a complex model. They then embark on a project to design and build a simulation.
  • Graphical design: Pupils work on editing photographic images for specified purposes. A discussion of the ethics of this type of digital manipulation of images follows.
  • Databases.   Pupils learn how to design and build information retrieval systems.
  • Web Design.  Pupils look at the features of successful web-pages, then design and build a working web-site.

The aim of ICT in this year is to provide a wide-ranging and enjoyable course that will prepare the pupils for the half course and full course GCSE that may be followed from the fourth form
