The 3rd Form Religious Studies course aims to develop and broaden the pupils’ knowledge and understanding by investigating several different world religions and by exploring various spiritual and ethical questions from the perspectives of Christianity and the other faiths we have studied. We hope to enable pupils to gain an insight into the diversity of global religious traditions, to think carefully about some of the important issues in our world today and to form their own viewpoints. The course begins by contrasting Western and Eastern belief systems and then introduces the key beliefs and practices of Hinduism and Buddhism. It then considers some ‘ultimate questions’ such as the existence of God, the problem of suffering and the possibility of life after death. The significant ethical issues of the sanctity of life, abortion, euthanasia, peace and conflict, crime and punishment are then examined, as well as environmental questions such as the care of the planet and our treatment of animals. Different religious and ethical responses to these issues are discussed and debated. The course we follow is loosely based upon existing GCSE Short Course syllabi and serves as a sound and relevant introduction to Religious Studies at GCSE and to further study of Religion, Philosophy and Ethics at A Level.
