INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Brief descriptions of the courses followed in the Sixth Form.

(OCR Examining Board)

There are no specific subject prerequisites for this course.  The overall aim of the course is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the principles of problem solving using ICT and of the range of applications of ICT and the effects of their use, and to apply this understanding when developing ICT solutions to problems.   Students develop an understanding of systems analysis and design, and methods of implementation and documentation.

Pupils work towards an AS level in the lower sixth year taking the following modules:

Unit 1 (2512) Information, Systems and Communications. (Examined)

This is the foundation for all subsequent modules.  It provides students with an understanding of the core aspects of ICT systems, which is developed and enhanced in subsequent units.  (15%)

Unit 2 (2513) Structured Practical ICT Tasks.

This unit provides students with opportunities to apply skills, knowledge and understanding.  The structured practical ICT Tasks examine the skills of design, testing, implementation and documentation.  (20%)

Unit 3 (2514) Practical Applications of ICT using Standard / Generic Application software.  (Examined)

This unit provides students with opportunities to acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of the way standard applications software is used in different contexts.  (15%)

Upper Sixth pupils continue to work towards an A2 undertaking modules in:

Unit 4 (2515) Communication Technology and its Application  (Examined)

Students extend knowledge and understanding of concepts related to ICT systems.  Some concepts previously encountered in Modules 2515 and 2514 are developed in greater depth.  The module covers communication between computers and interaction between humans and computers, and the converging technologies of IT and data communications.

Unit 5 (2516) ICT Project

This unit requires students to identify a well-defined problem, involving a third-party user, and to generate a solution using ICT.  This is carried out using applications software or other appropriate software chosen by the student.

Unit 6 (2517) ICT Systems and Systems Management  (Examined)

This unit extends the work students have covered in previous modules by studying  information in the organisation, management of change, advanced database systems and project management.

Assessment of units 1 and 3 are examined at the end of year one by way of two 90 minute written papers

Assessment of units 4 and 6 are examined at the end of year two by way of two 90 minute written papers.
