Spanish

Brief descriptions of the courses followed in the Sixth Form.

AS and A2 Level Spanish follows the Edexcel syllabus and is a unit-based course aimed at giving students a solid grounding in language skills along with a knowledge of the cultures and societies of the Spanish speaking world.

AS Level Spanish is a one year course, examined at the end of the Lower Sixth year.   It builds on the knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE and a high grade at GCSE is recommended for study at AS Level.   The subject is examined in three units which are:

•  Listening and Writing
•  Reading and Writing
•  Prepared Oral Topic

In the Upper Sixth at A2 Level students are examined in three further units which are

•  Oral Discussion of contemporary Issues
•  Topics and Texts
•  Listening, Reading and Writing

Topic areas for the AS/A2 courses include:

AS/A2

•  Day to Day Matters (food, diet, health, travel, tourism, current affairs, media)
•  Society (relationships, family, youth concerns, social issues)
•  The Working World (education, employment, business and industry, IT)

A2

•  Environment and Citizenship (energy and pollution, politics, campaigning organisations and charities)
•  The International Context (customs, traditions, beliefs, EU, world-wide problems)

Very little English is now used in the examinations; the medium for questions and answers is almost exclusively in Spanish.   Teaching is therefore also conducted as much as possible in the target language.   It is also recommended that students take part in the annual exchange to Madrid.
