Careers

A brief description of the course followed in Years 10 & 11.

In Year 10 all pupils receive Careers Guidance from the Senior Careers Adviser in small groups within the Careers Department.  They are introduced to the layout of the library and the resources and information available.  They research a career profile of their choice using these materials and make a presentation to their group.  The abilities, skills and competencies required within these profiles are discussed and analysed and they undertake an initial investigation into their own strengths.  Finally the groups are introduced to the choices that have to be made in the future: AS/A2, GAP year and Higher Education with a timetable of when these decisions have to be made.

In Year 11 all pupils take the Careers Questionnaire ‘Preview’ together with a series of psychometric tests ‘the Cambridge Profile’: these are administered by Cambridge occupational analysts (COA).  The results are published for each pupil in the form of a report and all receive this during an individual hand-over interview with a COA Careers adviser.  The aim is to begin the discussions over A-level/FE choice in conjunction with some specific career planning.

Following the GCSE examinations all Year 11 pupils take part in Work Experience for a minimum of one week.  The pupils are encouraged to apply for and organise their own placements and on completion, employers are asked to provide a report, and pupils to write an account of their experiences, which are discussed in debriefing seminars the following term.
