Chemistry

A brief description of the course followed in Years 10 & 11.

Pupils in years 10 and 11 continue the GCSE courses started in year 9.  A practical and investigative approach is taken.  Coursework consists of tests on practical work taken during normal lesson time.

At the end of the 4th Form all pupils take an external exam which contributes towards GCSE.

  • All pupils study a core consisting of:
  • Atomic Structure and Bonding
  • The Periodic Table
  • Acids, Bases and Chemical Equations
  • Obtaining Useful Products from Rocks
  • Obtaining Useful Products from Crude Oil
  • Obtaining Useful Products from Plant Oils
  • Rates of Reaction
  • Quantitative Chemistry
  • Obtaining Useful Products from the Air
  • Reversible Reactions
  • Energy Transfers in Reactions

Those pupils taking the extra science option will study the core topics in more depth and also study the following extension topics:

  • Water
  • Detection and Identification
