Music

A brief description of the course followed in Years 10 & 11.

GCSE Music is a flexible course that focuses upon Composing, Performing and Listening

Composing and Performing are internally assessed and moderated by the Examination Board. The Listening component is assessed by a listening test, which all pupils take at the end of the course.

The Performing element is covered almost automatically by anyone who learns an instrument (and therefore plays in an orchestra or band) or sings in a choir. Any instrumental style of music is acceptable for this part of the course.

Composing is an activity incorporated into the lower school curriculum. Pupils in Years 10 and 11 will develop this type of work more fully, composing in a range of styles and assisted by the use of computer-aided music technology.

The Listening course introduces pupils to a wide range of musical styles, from Classical to Rock, as well as "World" musics such as music from India and Cuba.  An interesting component of the course is the study of Dance Music, including Disco music of recent decades.

A pupil who has been learning to play a musical instrument would normally be very well placed for taking the GCSE Music.  30% of the total examination is ascribed to Performing.
