Spanish is the 4th most widely spoken language in the world today and is rapidly growing within our schools. In contrast to many countries, English is scarcely spoken in many parts of Latin America and so it is a great asset to be able to offer it to both universities and in the business world. Pupils opting for Spanish GCSE need to have studied it in Year 9 and to feel very comfortable with the work covered in that year. In Years 10 and 11 the Spanish curriculum is very much a continuation of what has been studied in Year 9. We follow the new OCR syllabus examined for the first time in 2003. All four language skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking are examined at the end of Year 11, all with equal weighting. The oral exam is conducted internally and sent to the Exam Board for marking. In Year 11 all of our students have the opportunity to attend a conversation lesson with the Spanish assistant who is a native speaker, developing their oral skills and also gaining a greater knowledge of Spain and the Spanish speaking world. Written coursework is also an alternative to the final writing exam. Spanish is used as far as possible as the medium for teaching and students are examined almost completely in the target language.
