Sport and Adventure

Dauntsey's school provides a wide variety of sporting and adventurous pursuits and regularly produces first-class teams in all sports. For girls, hockey, netball, athletics and tennis are the main team sports, with rugby, cricket, hockey, athletics and tennis for the boys.

All pupils have the opportunity to participate in athletics, swimming, squash, golf, tennis and many other sports; the list is very long but includes show jumping, soccer, water polo, judo, weight training, sub-aqua, aerobics and basketball.

The school has excellent facilities including a floodlit Astroturf pitch, a heated swimming pool, squash, tennis and netball courts, and a full sized sports hall.

Set out in over 120 acres, hockey, rugby and cricket pitches abound, and these are complemented by tennis courts, both lawn and hard, netball and squash courts, and rounders and lacrosse pitches. Those wishing to indulge in a more sedate activity can take advantage of the seven-hole golf course or use the croquet lawn.

To experience new cultures and challenge fresh opposition, Dauntsey’s sporting teams often tour foreign countries, and overseas tours to Australia, South America, South Africa, Barbados and New Zealand have taken place.

Our pupils are no strangers to county and national success. In a number of Dauntsey’s major sports pupils have achieved positions in representative teams for their respective sports. In Rugby, Cricket, Hockey and Athletics, a good (and increasing!) number of pupils have been selected to play for the County, and a few have also gained placements at National level and as members of West of England teams for their age group. The cricket 1st X1 compete in the Peak Schools Bath and District League and the 20s Cup, whilst the rugby 1st XV competes in the Daily Mail U18 Cup competition.

Equestrianism, an optional sport here at Dauntsey's, is one of small scale but much success.

As well as competing against many other schools in the area, Dauntsey's provides a Games option for all pupils. With an objective of improving the pupils' skills and knowledge of a variety of games, students are encouraged to involve themselves in many of the diverse activities available including, swimming, aerobics, rowing, badminton, squash, cycling and equestrian.

In conjunction with these opportunities, one option, canoeing is taken seriously with several teams entering the annual Devizes to Westminster race.

Brecons Challenge

In addition, the annual Brecon's Challenge event attracts pairs of senior girls and boys to spend a weekend canoeing, cycling and running through the Welsh mountains.  The Triathlon is another event that is gaining in popularity: this consists of 400m swim, followed by a 1.55 mile cycle ride and ending with a 0.25 mile run.

Our rural surroundings provide an ideal setting for many other outdoor activities. Participation in the Outward Bound Moonrakers programme is compulsory during the 3rd Form, (year 9), when courses such as survival and navigation run alongside a choice of activities, as varied as rock climbing and kayaking. Run by Dauntsey's staff and qualified instructors, it provides an introduction to various senior school societies and groups, including the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and the Ten Tors expedition.

The Moonrakers course culminates in a week's residential camp late in the summer term, where our own staff work alongside trained outdoor education instructors at an Outdoor Education Centre in North Wales.

Perhaps surprisingly for a landlocked school, we also maintain and sail "Jolie Brise". Built in 1913, this gaff cutter has won the Fastnet Race three times, and any girl or boy in the 4th Form (year 10) or above can join the sailing club. In the summer of 2000, Jolie Brise took part in - and won - 'Tall Ships 2000', a race which took her from Southampton to Cadiz, Bermuda, Charleston, New York, Boston, Halifax and Amsterdam.
