Jolie Brise Wins! Cowes Small Ships Race 2017.

On Saturday 7 October, ten pupils from the Sixth and Fifth Forms joined Jolie Brise in the Solent to take part in the annual Cowes Small Ships’ Race; one of the highlights of the School's autumn sailing programme.

This year's race was very windy with strong tides, making for a fast and exciting race. The fleet headed through the forts and towards Bembridge Ledge before returning to finish off Cowes. While the race is highly competitive, prizes are also awarded for the best dressed crew and the Spirit of the Race. This year, 22 vessels were entered although only 20 competed, under a handicap system devised by Sail Training International, in a truly youth-orientated race in which half of each boat's crew must be aged between 12 and 25 years.

The race was preceeded by a Parade of Sail in which the ships came close up to the shore to wave at the supporters. Even though it was cold and windy, spirits were high and there were plenty of mexican waves and cheers, the race then started at 10.30. Dauntsey’s crew sailed the boat fantastically and everyone was delighted to hear that Jolie Brise was placed first overall on corrected time by 13 minutes.
