Mercers' Lecture
The visit of Lord Tyler, CBE, DL proved to be an outstanding success and a superb school occasion when he gave the second Mercers' Lecture on Thursday, 20th November, 2008.
First, he addressed members of The Head Master's Essay Society, speaking on the topic Bring Back Guy Fawkes; he then proceeded to entertain and stimulate a packed audience in the Library on his area of particular concern: Commons and Lords- Parliamentary Partners for the Twenty-First Century. His ideas were very well received and all members of the School felt it gave them opportunity to reflect upon the nature of our constitutional monarchy and consider some of the weighty areas of reform that still need to be addressed in our democracy. The number of students who remarked on the worthiness and value of Lord Tyler's visit was noteworthy.
The School now eagerly awaits the third Mercers' Lecture, given by Lord Butler, on Friday, 13th March 2009, entitled, Why we invaded Iraq. Tickets are free and available from the School Reception.
