Mercers' Lecture: Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod
The Mercers' Lecture on Thursday 16th October, given by Lt Gen Sir Michael Willcocks, KCB, Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, was much appreciated by the School and local community. Following a paper to The Head Master's Essay Society on a similar theme earlier in the evening, Black Rod spoke with great interest on the issue of Monarchy and its relationship with Parliament. He outlined the advantages of constitutional monarchy and issued caution at initiating House of Lords reform without a clear appreciation of its unforeseen consequences. The occasion was very well attended and the School looks forward to the next Mercers' Lecture this term when Lord Tyler will be speaking on 'Commons and Lords, Parliamentary Partners for the 21st Century' on Thursday, 20th November, in the Memorial Hall.
