County Champions 2009
The U14 Girls' Hockey team progressed to the West Regional Finals after defeating Marlborough College on Wednesday 11th November in the final of the WCHA round of the English Schools Cup.
The team finished top of Pool A after comfortable victories over Godolphin and Warminster, and Marlborough did likewise in Pool B, so both teams came head to head in the final. In a hard fought and tense affair, there were chances for both teams to score a decisive goal and secure victory, but after 30 minutes of action, the game ended goalless. Therefore, the match had to be decided by a penalty stroke competition. In fading light, the barrage of strokes took place on the adjacent pitch, Astro 2, under floodlights, which only added to the drama.
With the five players selected by each team the stage was set. A large crowd had gathered beside the pitch to witness the outcome. Flossie Shepherd, in goal for Dauntsey's, continued her outstanding form, expertly saving three Marlborough strokes, whilst Shannon Thomson and Vicky Bartlett converted theirs, meaning that Marlborough had to score with their fourth attempt. With the ball going wide of the goal, Dauntsey's had an unassailable lead, and won the match 2-0 after penalty strokes.
Cue the celebrations!
The Dauntsey's U14 Girls now go on to represent Wiltshire, as county champions, at the West Regional Finals on Sunday 29th November, at Clifton College.
