History Battlefields Trip

Taking 56 Fifth Form to the Somme battlefield and the Ypres Salient, the trip provided a fantastic insight into the Western Front of the Great War. Initially being based in Arras, the party began at Beaumont Hamel on a walking tour along the Somme front line of 1st July 1916, including Newfoundland Park, the Ulster Tower and Thiepval. It continued north, after lunch at Tommy's cafe, Pozieres, with a visit to the Lochnagar Crater, Mametz and Maricourt, finishing at the Devonshire cemetery. The following day, we departed for Cambrai to visit 'Deborah', the First World War veteran tank from the Battle of Cambrai, and moved on to the Ypres Salient, where we visited the Cloth Hall 'In Flanders Fields' and Passchendaele museums, the Tyncot and Langemark cemeteries and concluded with a service of remembrance at Talbot House. The trip was organised superbly by Mrs Emma Crozier and Mr Adam Reid led a fantastic guided tour. The trip made a great impact, particularly because it was in the season of remembrance, and it will be truly remembered by the students for years to come.
