Report from on board Jolie Brise: Monday 3rd August, 2009
A New Record Set
Day 18 - Crew Report - 03/08/09
The promised heavy winds have now enveloped us making life on board wet, cold and difficult. With all hands on deck we have taken the main sail down to its second reef, reducing the amount of exposed sail and making the boat easier to handle. By doing this now we are further preparing for the continued and increasing winds that are set to be with us for the next few days, at times supposedly reaching 45 knots. We are anticipating the finish line, but embracing the stormy weather and high seas.
A new Jolie Brise record has been reached by Adam last night as he managed to squeeze 14.1 knots of boat speed from the helm whilst surfing down a wave. However our average was more around 10 knots which meant that we chewed up around 180 miles in the last day; this seems meagre compared to the new Atlantic record where they managed to go 907 miles in 24 hours.
