Dear Parents and Guardians,

Swine Flu

A very small number of pupils (three at most) at Dauntsey’s have been unwell in recent days. There is a possibility that they may be suffering from swine flu, and I am writing to provide you with some information in order to address any concerns that you might have.

Nationally, the situation regarding swine flu has been updated and anyone presenting with a temperature of 38oC or higher and with flu like symptoms is now being issued with Tamiflu, the drug used to treat swine flu. As a result of being unwell, at least one pupil from Dauntsey’s is now being treated with Tamiflu.

We are liaising closely with the local NHS (NHS Wiltshire), the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the Local Authority regarding this matter. Having taken advice, I have decided to keep the School open as normal. I have already emphasised to the School the need for vigilance over personal hygiene. I have consulted widely on any extra precautions that we need to take and, as a result, we will be ensuring that all pupils have access to alcohol gel dispensers from Monday onwards.

In the vast majority of cases, swine flu is a mild illness and those affected make a full and quick recovery. Children and adults who do not have flu like symptoms should continue their daily routines as normal.

Parents of any children who show signs of specific flu-like symptoms (temperature, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, runny noses or vomiting / diarrhoea) are advised to phone their family doctor for advice. So as to limit the spread of the infection, please do not let sufferers attend the surgery in person.

For general information about swine flu visit or contact:

I will keep you up to date with the situation. I can assure that at the moment the other 797 pupils seem to be fit and well, and even enjoying the novelty of school life at the beginning of a new term.

With all good wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Stewart Roberts
