Mercers' Lecture: Lord Geddes -'The House of Lords: Past, Present and Future'
On Friday 16th October, Dauntsey's was pleased to welcome Lord Geddes as the second speaker on this year's Mercers' Lecture Series.
Following a session with the Head Master's Essay Society beforehand, speaking on 'The reform of Parliament', Lord Geddes addressed a large and appreciative audience of 150 in the Memorial Hall. It was a stimulating and challenging lecture which provided a fascinating insight into 'The House of Lords-Past, Present and Future'. As one of the 90 hereditary peers selected to remain in the House of Lords after the House of Lords Act 1999, Lord Geddes provided a superb insight into the existing role of the House of Lords and, most importantly, its future as our political system recovers after recent turmoil. His Lecture addressed some of the most relevant questions facing our constitution.
The School is eagerly anticipating the third Mercers' Lecture for this academic year immediately after Half Term on Monday, 2 November at 7.30pm. Entitled 'General Reflections', General Mike Jackson will offer an excellent perspective on Britain's international role as the twenty-first century unfolds.
