Polly Teale's 'Mermaid'

Over a span of three days last week, a cast of twenty pupils performed Polly Teale’s ‘Mermaid’, an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘Little Mermaid’.

The plot explored the character of ‘Blue’ (played by Hannah Barnes) writing a modern fairy-tale as an escape from a life filled with insecurities.

The cast successfully utilised physical theatre as a vehicle to plunge the audience into the mermaid world. Anni Crichard’s lighting design fully immersed the stage into the deep waters, whilst Graeme Smith controlled the sound to beautifully underscore the dialogue.

Directed by Mrs Chambers, with costume designed by Miss Seager and a striking set designed by Mr Herring, the production conveyed a clear divide between the troubles on land versus the peace under the water.
