Mercers’ Lecture Review – Lord Jones

On Thursday 28 January, Digby Jones visited Dauntsey’s to talk about his experiences in business and trade and to share his long- and short-term predictions for the current government and economy.

After a lively discussion and dinner, Lord Jones delivered an entertaining lecture in which he addressed both the effect of the economic crisis and some key political issues for the near future, including the effect of the refugee crisis and immigration on the EU referendum and the apparent popularity of Trump and Corbyn on the 2016 and 2020 elections respectively.

He also held a captive audience with a selection of anecdotes from one poorly attended speech to his first ever TV appearance – a baptism of fire opposite Jeremy Paxman – to a poignant parable of leadership from his time as an 18-year-old Navy cadet. The evening was rounded off with some thought-provoking questions from the floor, and we would like to thank Lord Jones for taking the time out of his very busy schedule to come to Dauntsey’s and share his insights with us.
