Mercers’ Lectures – Spring 2016

Our Mercers’ Lecture series provide pupils and members of the local community with a great opportunity to listen – and contribute – to insights from some leading business and political commentators. So far this term the School have welcomed the Earl of Selborne and Vince Cable to Dauntsey’s.

Before each lecture, the speakers join a group of Sixth Formers for dinner and lively discussion with time to exchange views.

Reviews

Rt Hon Earl of Selborne

On Friday the 15 January, Dauntsey's had the privilege of hosting the Earl of Selborne, one of the last hereditary members of the House of Lords, for an excellent Mercers' Lectures.

After a fascinating discussion on Reform in the House of Lords, in which we were encouraged to question the somewhat undemocratic system of government currently in place, the conversation then moved to topics such as science, research, and politics as a whole. Earl Selborne then gave his lecture on ‘Research and Development Priorities’, which challenged an engaged audience to think about the issues facing the world at large.

Rt Hon Vince Cable

For the second Mercers’ Lecture of 2016, Vince Cable visited Dauntsey’s for his lecture titled ‘After The Storm’, looking at the outcome and recovery from the 2008 global financial crisis. After an intriguing discussion and excellent meal, all were left enlightened and illuminated by his insightfulness and expertise in the field. The discussion beforehand was particularly interesting, with Vince Cable hotly debating with many of the Sixth Formers on issues such as the Coalition, social housing, and democracy.

Great to hear @vincecable speak last night @DauntseysSchool on China, oil prices, nuclear energy & govt's lack of support for renewable. Sophy F-W @SFWcomms.
