Jolie Brise on Bermudan Stamp
JB appears on 400th anniversary stamp.
Dauntsey's has just learned that the School's famous gaff pilot cutter, Jolie Brise, is to feature on an 85 cent stamp in Bermuda, to be released in the spring. The stamp has been especially commissioned as part of the Bermuda Isle's 400th anniversary celebrations. Jolie Brise was the last ship under sail to carry the mail out of Bermuda: she holds a special place in Bermuda's history and is well known on the islands. Jolie Brise is also known for her part in the 1932 Newport Bermuda Race in which her crew carried out the courageous rescue of those onboard the floundering schooner, Adriana.
To feature on a commemorative anniversary stamp is a great honour for Jolie Brise, and for Dauntsey's School. No doubt, our pupils will be greatly welcomed when they sail Jolie Brise into Bermuda this summer, as part of the 2009 Trans-Atlantic Tall Ships' Race.
