London Trip
Historians in the Capital
At the end of the Spring Term the History Department took sixteen Sixth Form historians to London for a long weekend of historical and cultural exploration. In a packed programme they toured the Magnificence of the Tsars and the Stephen Jones millinery exhibitions at the V&A, visited Tate Britain and Tate Modern, were guided around the Rose and the Globe Theatres, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, HMS Belfast, the Cabinet War Rooms, Whitehall and Westminster Abbey, attended choral evensong at St Pauls, went on the London Eye and a Thames river boat, and were privileged to conclude the trip with a guided tour of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The evenings' entertainments included seeing Graham Norton take the lead in the acclaimed revival of La Cage aux Folles, and hearing the up-and-coming young singer/songwriter Kirsty McGee in concert in Camden, while suppers ranged from a cosy candlelit French restaurant in South Kensington on Friday evening, through to a vegetarian feast in Camden on Sunday, via the best that Chinatown could offer on Saturday. It was the first time that the History Department has run such a trip, but given the enormous success of the weekend, this is likely to become established as one of the highlights of the department's year.
