Boys' Football Tour to Villareal

Over the February half term break, Mr Rob Lewis and Mr Pete Thomas accompanied 18 Fifth and Sixth Form boys on a Football Tour to Villareal in Spain. They were well looked after by Villareal Football Club and received four days of excellent coaching from their staff, with several of the sessions taken by recently retired professional Carlos Llorens.

The boys particularly enjoyed being able to play on excellent surfaces, both grass and synthetic, and they competed in two matches against local Spanish opposition, Onda and Vall d'Uixó. Although both games were lost, the boys improved markedly from one game to the next, taking on board and putting into practice what they had learnt on the training ground. The boys were also able to watch the Villareal first team squad in training and were lucky enough to grab a few autographs, including former Arsenal player Robert Pires and current Spanish international Joan Capdevila.

On Saturday night (10 pm kick off!) they watched Villareal play against Athletic Bilbao in El Madrigal stadium. It was great fun, Villareal won 2-1, Bilbao missed a penalty and three players were sent off! Sunday, in the middle of the tour was a "rest" day with a beach football tournament in the morning and then a trip to Valencia in the afternoon.
