Model United Nations Conference
Dauntsey's School sent a team of pupil delegates to attend the Model United Nation Conference at St. Laurence School on On Friday 27th and Saturday 28th November. The team was assigned 'Croatia' and the six delegates (five of whom are pictured above) were: Jethro Thompson (organizer), George Combe, Barnaby Goodall, Yusi Liu, Igor Lyullin, Alibek Kruglikov. Between them they attended five different committees, including the Security Council, the Economic Committee, the Human Rights Committee, the Political Committee, the Environment Committee and the Africa Committee.
The Team's resolution papers gained support from at least 15 other delegations and three out of five of its resolution papers from Jethro Thompson (the Security Council), George Combe (the Economic Committee) and Yusi Liu (the Political Committee) went through to the Committee debate on Saturday. Out of these three papers, the Global War on Terror (Yusi Liu, the Political Committee) paper was passed with 18 votes in favour, 12 votes against and three abstensions.
On Saturday, the General Assembly debated a resolution, drafted by 'France', whose representative was an experienced speaker at the Model UN conference. The Dauntsey's Team ('Croatia') voted against the resolution and was the first delegation to take the floor in response. In front of hundreds of other delegates, Barnaby Goodall was eloquent and persuasive in presenting the case against the resolution. It concluded with a majority of votes against the proposal.
The delegates were very grateful to in particular to Mr Nigel Yates for his help and advice throughout the Conference.
