Waterside C Canoe Race

On Sunday 7th March, the Dauntsey's Devizes to Westminster paddling squad took part in the Waterside C canoe race. The race, which starts at Pewsey Wharf and ends 23 miles later at Newbury Wharf, incorporates 35 portages and is part of the waterside race series, recognised as the classic build up for the Devizes to Westminster Race. Although the paddlers began the race in the usual fashion - on the water and in their kayaks - they hit solid ice not long after the Pewsey start. Competitors were left with no option but to run along the canal bank, portaging their kayaks on their shoulders, for a total of seven miles, before being able to get back in the water. Despite this gruelling start to the race, the Dauntsey's paddlers kept up their spirits, thanks largely to the excellent support from their parents and spectators, and reached Newbury with impressive times. With over 200 boats taking part, many of our paddlers ranked high in their categories, and the Dauntsey's Squad finished second out of the 12 participating schools. Congratulations to them all.
