Duke of Edinburgh Gold
19 members of the Sixth Form enjoyed a challenging three days in South Wales on their Gold DofE practice expedition.
Conditions were fine and sunny when they set off from the Dulwich College Field centre in Callwen on day one, to yomp across 20km of the Black Mountain area to the west of the Brecon Beacons. On arrival at their campsite at the end of a long and arduous day, the three groups and their instructors were greeted by the Headmaster who had come to see them. The next day their journey took them into the heart of this wild area; during the course of the day they undertook micro-navigation exercises and first aid scenarios, topped off with a night navigation exercise. The instructors stood back on the final day which dawned misty and damp. The three teams navigated their way back successfully to the Field Centre taking in the spectacular Fan Hir ridge en route. Following a thorough debrief from the Nick, Stu and Paul (their instructors), all wearily climbed aboard the minibuses and returned to School. They will now all go forward to their assessed expedition in Mid-Wales in July.
