Nigel Balchin OD, 1918-1927

New Biography of a Famous Old Dauntseian

A new book tells the fascinating life story of a former Dauntsey’s pupil. Nigel Balchin first attended the school in 1918 (when it was still known as the Dauntsey Agricultural School) and left in 1927, the same year in which he served as Captain of the School. Balchin went on to become firstly an industrial psychologist (in this capacity he was largely responsible for the success of Black Magic chocolates) and later one of the finest novelists of his generation, author of classic thrillers such as The Small Back Room.

An account of Balchin’s schooldays is included in His Own Executioner: The Life of Nigel Balchin by Derek Collett, the first biography to be devoted to this multitalented individual. Priced at £11.99, the book is available from major online retailers or can be ordered from any UK bookshop.
