Head Master's Notices
This week has seen the First Form entrance examinations and interviews for 2017. Over a hundred and sixty candidates were superbly looked after by our Third Form pupils, who were wonderful ambassadors for the School.
We have been working hard on the arrangements for Billy Elliot in the West End, which will be on Sunday 19 March at the Novello Theatre. The application form will be live on our website on Friday 3 February and, as demand for tickets is expected to be high, there will be a very limited time frame to book tickets - do please read the information below.
I hope you all have a restful and relaxing Exeat weekend.

Billy Elliot hits the West End
The attached document outlines the process for applying for tickets to go and see Billy Elliot at the Novello Theatre in London on Sunday 19 March. Please do take the time to read through the document thoroughly, as there are different options available for tickets and transport. The application form will be live on our website on Friday 3 February at 11.00 for one hour only.
A reminder that A-level options for Fifth Formers are due in to tutors on Monday please.

Jolie Brise – Summer Programme 2017
This year we are taking part in the Rendez-vous 2017 Tall Ships Race Regatta as part of the summer sailing programme, which will include destinations such Gaspé, Quebec, Halifax and Lé Havre.

Art History Lecture
Lavinia Harrington: The City as a work of art: myths and masterminds of Renaissance Venice
Monday 6 February at 19:30 in the Pavilion
Venice during the 15th and 16th century was one of the most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities on earth. This talk will explore the context, artworks and writings of fascinating artists and social commentators of this resplendent Republic. Artists covered will include Gentile and Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Titian and the famous cartographer Jacopo de' Barbari.
Lavinia Harrington studied History of Art at Oxford University and completed an MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art before specialising in the Renaissance and 20th century French art. Lavinia has since taught Art History in London, Italy and France and is currently Director of Studies for Art History Abroad and Creative Associate for The Bigger Picture. She further has experience working in galleries and has contributed research for BBC and Channel 4 art documentaries.
Mercers' Lectures - Spring Term 2017

Mariella Frostrup is a writer and broadcaster, firmly established as an intelligent and accessible commentator in a wide range of programmes and publications. She is currently best known as presenter of Radio 4’s long running weekly programme Open Book, and until recently presenter of Sky Arts “Mariella’s Book Show”.

Department Parents’ Evening, for instrumental and vocal tuition, this year is
as detailed above and will take place in the Memorial Hall. If you are planning to attend
the evening please do let your child know and then the instrumental teachers
will arrange an appointment time for you. Your son/daughter will bring
this home in a letter.

Sixth Form London Careers Trip and Reception in Mercers’ Hall
Wednesday 8 February
Visiting the Houses of Parliament, the Law Courts, or a City Bank, this is an excellent day for those considering careers in Politics, Law, Financial Services, Accountancy, Insurance, Management Consultancy etc, particularly those studying Economists and Business Studies. However, if you are also considering other careers we suggest this could be a great day to open your mind to other options, and find out about other jobs in our great Capital City.
In the evening we are holding a networking Reception at the Mercers’ Hall, by kind permission of the Worshipful Company of Mercers, attended by Mentors with careers as varied as law, advertising, banking, pharmaceuticals, consultancy and drone mapping. 3 day INSPIRE (Fifth Form) or HEADSTART (Lower Sixth) courses
Students who have a passion for STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths) are strongly recommended to consider
applying for one of the 3 day INSPIRE (5th form) or HEADSTART (Lower
6th) courses at leading UK Universities. They have broad-based
engineering courses and a wide range of specialist courses.
As part of their determination to encourage girls to study engineering, the majority of 5th form courses are for girls.
Some are residential, some non-residential, and costs vary.

A lovely quirky pub right in the centre of Devizes has agreed to host us for a very easy, light-hearted Supper. They will do a simple main course and pudding supper for around £15 dependent on numbers. Beer/wine- we'll have to purchase on top of that.
It's a great chance to get together after half term and before Parents Evening.

Dauntsey's 24 Hour Runathon

If you are in the Fifth or Sixth Form and fancy taking part in a fun,
challenging fundraiser, sign up to Dauntsey’s 24 Runathon.
Sign up for one (or more) half-hour slot in The Glasshouse.
You pay £10 to enter and encourage family and friends to sponsor for the whole event via our Virgin Giving Webpage.
All money raised goes directly to Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
The sign-up sheet for Rockfest 2017 will be available on the noticeboard outside the music studio after Exeat. Please encourage your children to sign up for a sound check and rehearsal slot on Sunday 26 February. The start times on this sheet and the length of the rehearsals will be approximate until we know how many pupils wish to perform.

Lower School Notices and Reminders
Last Friday G3, G2, B4 and B9 enjoyed treat night with the Hursts!
Many of The Manor boys and girls had a great day out on the Lower School paintball trip on Sunday.
The main event this week was The Manor Pub Quiz on Wednesday, organised again this year by Mrs Hurst. Ten teams competed, with ‘The Manor Spicy Sportsmen’ emerging as the eventual winners on 46 points after 6 gruelling rounds. ‘Manor House Hippies’ were close on their heels with 45.5
Everyone is heading off for a few days to catch up on some rest over Exeat, and then we have a couple of action-packed weeks ahead, before half term, including an ice skating trip, a shopping trip to Salisbury, a night hike, Lower School clay pigeon shooting trip and the usual treat nights and fun and games at The Manor!
