Dauntsey's Bulletin no. 64
Friday 26 May 2017
Head Master's Notices
It has been a busy and productive first half of term, with revision dominating for the top three years (and for our Fourth Form Mathematicians). I have been hugely impressed with how these examination years have gone about their business and I hope that the examinations themselves are kind to them. They certainly deserve to do well and I wish them the best of luck with their revision next week.
A group of Fourth Formers set off today on their Geography fieldtrip to Barcelona and next week some Second and Third Formers are heading off to Madrid on a Spanish trip. Elsewhere, some of the Fourth Form are joining our ‘Trek to the Stones’ expedition, which involves walking between 30 and 50 kilometres from Dauntsey’s to Avebury, camping for one night en route.
One of the features of this year has been the wide range of fund raising events for this year’s charity, Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Farmer have surely stolen the award for the best event of this type for their boules competition, which attracted great interest and huge crowds. Sadly, the Senior Management Team went out in the preliminary round and even worse was to come when the PE Department swept to victory: the silver lining though, is that it is now clear what they do with their spare time.
After a fun leavers' breakfast this morning I am looking forward to seeing the Upper Sixth and their parents at the leavers' BBQ this afternoon.
I wish you all a happy and relaxing half-term.

FREE CyberFirst Courses for students aged 14 - 17yrs
The National Cyber Security Centre (part of GCHQ), the Smallpeice Trust and QA are jointly running a series of Free CyberFirst courses throughout the Summer Holidays.
The courses represent a great opportunity to build on your existing cyber skills and interests. The courses are free with the aim of encouraging participation from as wide a section of society as possible. Running throughout the courses is a strong emphasis on the ethics and legalities of ‘messing around’ with computers and the internet.
Please follow the link for more information.
The school is always very keen to hear from parents who may be able to offer work experience/shadowing opportunities or who are aware of work experience programs in the organisation they work for. The pupils gain a huge amount from the process and, in our experience, those involved on the employer side also find the process most worthwhile.
Placement duration tends to be between two and five days and arranging them is far simpler than many anticipate. If you would like to know more then do please contact either James O’Hanlon email@example.com or Carrie Watson firstname.lastname@example.org in the Careers Department
Engineering Work Experience
Now in its third year; Dauntsey’s pupils will have the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience at MOD Lyneham. Primarily aimed at potential engineers (16 years old and above), the week will give an overview of helicopter, wheeled and armoured vehicle maintenance training. It will encompass classroom, hangar and outdoor activities. The week should provide a valuable insight to working life outside the school environment. Limited to 10 places.
Please contact Mr James O’Hanlon, Dauntsey’s career advisor.

Lower School Notices and Reminders
On the last night before half-term, all of the Manor boys and girls had a great evening. It kicked off with the Manor Charity Duck Race in the stream – the boys and girls had a great time in the water/mud – before an outside tea on the lawn. Then it was all-go on the infamous water slide for an hour of slipping and sliding! The First Formers then had ice cream as a treat from their tutors, before everyone headed to bed, exhausted but very happy!
I hope you all enjoy a happy and relaxing half term break!

Sunday June 11
12:00 - 16:00 at Manor House
This year’s Manor House Charity Fete, in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, is happening on Sunday 11 June and preparations are well under way. With last year’s fete raising over £1000, we want this year to be even bigger and better...so we need your help! We are looking for a few things to aid the smooth running of our event:
- Pop up gazebos or small marquees
- Hay bales (roughly 8 to create a seating area for our performance stage)
- Cakes to be sold
- Jam jars filled with sweets or toys for our Jam Jar Tombola
- Bunting to decorate our gorgeous surroundings
- Old bed sheets to be made in to sacks for the sack race (adult, pupil, children and staff races throughout the day!)
We are also collecting raffle prizes – big or small. So far we have a ‘One night stay at The Peppermill Devizes B&B’; an hour of Clay Pigeon Shooting at Barbury Shooting School; a riding lesson at Pewsey Vale Riding School...and much more. Any donations, big or small, would be gratefully received.
If you have any of the
above, or have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Anais Seager
Please feel free to join us for what should be another great day and all for a good cause - it is suitable for all ages! We look forward to welcoming you to The Manor on Sunday 11 June from 12:00 until 16:00.
