Dauntsey's Bulletin no. 66
Friday 16 June 2017
Head Master's Notices
The Third Form have proved to be a superb group at Moonrakers Camp in Aberdovey; they have been involved with sailing, kayaking, rock climbing and more, and took part in an expedition where they walked over 20km and spent a night, in the wilderness, under canvas. I really enjoyed my visit, not just because of the glorious weather, but also because this week provides some of the challenges and opportunities that I feel a first-class education is all about. I hope that they are enjoying their last day before heading back to Wiltshire tomorrow.
The sun is going to continue to shine for our First and Second Form Manorites who are heading to Rockley Point in Poole this weekend for water-sports and beach games.
Tomorrow sees fixtures against Clifton College, Warminster, and Wellington College, and our Boys’ and Girls’ Athletes will be at the South West Championships. Best of luck to all of you.
I do hope that you all have an enjoyable weekend; time to fire up that barbecue!

These cars, created by a host of renowned artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Jeff Koons, transformed cars into canvas, putting Art in Motion. Using the M6GT3 template students will be asked to create their own BMW Art Car. Submissions must be delivered to the Art School by 16:00 Wednesday 5 July 2017. Entries will be judged by Johnny Messum from Messums Gallery and Professor Dale Harrow, Head of Vehicle Design at the Royal College of Art. Ten finalists will be selected and asked to transpose their 2D designs onto a 3D model. One finalist will then be chosen and their car design will be exhibited at Messums Gallery Wiltshire.
The competition brief will be published to students on Monday 19 June 2017.

Vaughan's Cookery School
Intensive Professional Cookery Qualification
Vaughan's Kitchen are currently recruiting for their Summer Intensive Course, which will run from 21 August to 8 September. This course is suitable for our Upper Sixth leavers, and will provide a qualification for gap year jobs such as working in a ski chalet, holiday villa or yacht crew etc. It also would gain you the knowledge and skills for further employment in the catering industry.
After Christmas Vaughan's will run another less intensive course on Mondays for 12 weeks.
Please see the attached leaflet for further information.
Model United Nations
Nineteen pupils from the current Third to Lower Sixth Forms are starting their preparations for the trip to the Model United Nations conference in The Hague, which takes place over three days in November. The pupils have been assigned to committees and their task over the next few months is to learn as much as possible about the views of Mali and Turkey (our allocated countries) on the issues which are to be debated in the various committees.
Of particular interest will be the contributions of Polly Maton & Georgina Henwood, who are representing Turkey on the Advisory Panel on Kurdistan and Natasha Whitrow & Sasha Broadhead who are representing Mali on the 1967 Historical Security Council discussing the Arab-Israeli & Vietnam wars.
For anyone who is interested in the conference and the topics covered, please visit www.munish.nl.
The school is always very keen to hear from parents who may be able to offer work experience/shadowing opportunities or who are aware of work experience programs in the organisation they work for. The pupils gain a huge amount from the process and, in our experience, those involved on the employer side also find the process most worthwhile.
Placement duration tends to be between two and five days and arranging them is far simpler than many anticipate. If you would like to know more then do please contact either James O’Hanlon email@example.com or Carrie Watson firstname.lastname@example.org in the Careers Department
Engineering Work Experience
Now in its third year; Dauntsey’s pupils will have the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience at MOD Lyneham. Primarily aimed at potential engineers (16 years old and above), the week will give an overview of helicopter, wheeled and armoured vehicle maintenance training. It will encompass classroom, hangar and outdoor activities. The week should provide a valuable insight to working life outside the school environment. Limited to 10 places.
Please contact Mr James O’Hanlon, Dauntsey’s career advisor.
University Open Days.
Many institutions hold Open Days in the summer term and for many of these it is perfectly acceptable to simply turn up on the day. However, pre booking for some is advised especially if you wish to access some of the lectures on offer. Individual University websites are the best source of information but a useful central list can be found at https://www.opendays.com/

Lower School Notices and Reminders
The Manor First and Second Form have enjoyed a quiet week with all of the Third Form away on their Moonrakers trip – the weather has been kind, so the Third Form have had a great time in Wales, and the younger cohort have enjoyed getting the water slide, snacks and House all to themselves back at home.
This weekend, as the Third Form return, the First and Second Form go on their trip to Rockley Point for a few days of sailing, raft building, crabbing, paddle-boarding, wind-surfing, and many more fun activities. It will be a great trip and I am sure all of the pupils and staff involved will enjoy the break!
Next week, the Second Form can look forward to their trip to Head for Heights on Tuesday, the water slide will no doubt be out most afternoons/evenings, and the last group of Third Form ‘dinner guests for the Hursts’ will enjoy a meal with their Houseparents.
