Dauntsey's Bulletin no. 67
Friday 23 June 2017
Head Master's Notices
Next week, most of our Fifth Form will return for post-GCSE Life Skills courses. There is a wide-range of choices on offer, such as the leadership academy, rescue and emergency first aid, cookery, sewing, lifesaving and the Jurassic Adventure, which departs on Sunday evening.
The Lower Sixth are now taking time to explore their options after Dauntsey’s with many attending University Open Days over the next couple of weeks. I hope that all of them will attend the ‘Speed Date the Professionals’ evening on Tuesday.
Tomorrow, our cricket teams take on Kingswood, whilst the tennis teams play Bryanston and King Edward's School, Bath.
On Sunday, we welcome our new pupils who are joining in September. I do hope that they have a wonderful day, and that it will be the start of some life-long friendships. We also have our Old Dauntseian Family day on at the same time.
Have a good weekend.

Model United Nations
Nineteen pupils from the current Third to Lower Sixth Forms are starting their preparations for the trip to the Model United Nations conference in The Hague, which takes place over three days in November. The pupils have been assigned to committees and their task over the next few months is to learn as much as possible about the views of Mali and Turkey (our allocated countries) on the issues which are to be debated in the various committees.
Of particular interest will be the contributions of Polly Maton & Georgina Henwood, who are representing Turkey on the Advisory Panel on Kurdistan and Natasha Whitrow & Sasha Broadhead who are representing Mali on the 1967 Historical Security Council discussing the Arab-Israeli & Vietnam wars.
For anyone who is interested in the conference and the topics covered, please visit www.munish.nl.
The school is always very keen to hear from parents who may be able to offer work experience/shadowing opportunities or who are aware of work experience programs in the organisation they work for. The pupils gain a huge amount from the process and, in our experience, those involved on the employer side also find the process most worthwhile.
Placement duration tends to be between two and five days and arranging them is far simpler than many anticipate. If you would like to know more then do please contact either James O’Hanlon firstname.lastname@example.org or Carrie Watson email@example.com in the Careers Department
Engineering Work Experience
Now in its third year; Dauntsey’s pupils will have the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience at MOD Lyneham. Primarily aimed at potential engineers (16 years old and above), the week will give an overview of helicopter, wheeled and armoured vehicle maintenance training. It will encompass classroom, hangar and outdoor activities. The week should provide a valuable insight to working life outside the school environment. Limited to 10 places.
Please contact Mr James O’Hanlon, Dauntsey’s career advisor.

Lower School Notices and Reminders
The Manor Third Formers returned from an enjoyable and exhausting week in the sun for their Moonrakers trip last weekend. Similarly, the First and Second Form had a great 3 days in Poole, where they enjoyed kayaking, wind-surfing, paddle-boarding, sailing, crabbing and more; the intense sunshine reflected the warm camaraderie between all of the boys and girls who went, and they all had a happy and fun time together.
This week saw the latest (and last!) Third Form dinner with the Hursts – as ever, the conversation was boisterous but diverse, covering a huge range of topics including GCSE choices, politics, sport, future careers, teaching styles, House rules…to name but a few!
Friday will see the last Housemaster’s ‘treat night’ of the year, as we are busy the next two Fridays. And on Saturday, we are hosting 13 new pupils for a ‘taste of boarding’ and Manor life – I have no doubt the water slide will be out once again…it has seen a lot of use this week!
Next week, pupils can look forward to The Manor Football Competition, the Third Form Ball, and numerous tutor outings – another busy and fun week for all of our boys and girls.
