13 + Scholarships

A range of Awards are available at this point of entry and include Scholarships, Performing Arts Awards, Sports Award, Jolie Brise All Rounder Boarding Award and Head Master's Awards.

Scholarships and Awards carry remission of a maximum of 10% of the School fees. Scholarship supplements are available for those who need additional financial help with the school fees and are subject to means testing.

Scholarships, interviews, and auditions for September 2018 entry will be held at Dauntsey's during the week commencing 13 November 2017. The closing date for entries is Monday 16 October 2017


Candidates for Academic and the Desmond Morris Science Scholarships will sit papers in English, mathematics, and science. All candidates will be interviewed by the Deputy Head (Academic) and the Head of Science.  

Batten Sports Award

The Batten Sports Awards are awarded to candidates who are outstanding in one or more of the following sports: for boys - rugby, hockey and cricket; for girls - hockey, netball, tennis and athletics. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed record of sporting achievement, supported by testimonials from their coaches, and shortlisted pupils will attend an interview with the Director of Sport, or one of his team, as well as take part in a series of practical assessments.

Performing Arts Awards

Performing Arts Awards are given to candidates who not only show an outstanding practical ability, but also display a passion and love of drama, dance and/or music and demonstrate a willingness to share their enthusiasm with others.

All candidates will be required to provide a detailed record of achievement, together with appropriate testimonials from their teachers, and shortlisted pupils will be assessed by interview and audition.

Drama candidates will have an audition for which two contrasting speeches of no longer than two minutes should be prepared. If a candidate wishes to offer Dance they should perform two short dances, ideally of different disciplines and ones they have made up themselves. If a candidate wishes to offer both, we would then like to see one monologue and one short dance.

Music Awards are made to talented musicians in order that they may develop and broaden all aspects of their musical ability. Candidates will have an audition for which two contrasting pieces on at least one instrument or voice should be prepared. Importance is attached to overall musical potential and enthusiasm rather than formal qualifications.

The Jolie Brise All Rounder Boarding Awards

Dauntsey's is the proud owner of one of the most famous racing vessels in the world, Jolie Brise. It is fitting that Dauntsey's prestigious All-Rounder Awards are named after this remarkable vessel. In recent years, crewed by pupils of the School, Jolie Brise has been the overall winner of Tall Ships' Race series three times.

Candidates should prepare a  portfolio of their work and achievement's to demonstrate both academic competence and an ability to make a significant contribution to the life of the School.

This portfolio should be brought to interview during which candidates will be asked to discuss their participation in any academic, sporting, musical, dramatic or other school activity, as well as their wider contribution to boarding life.

 Head Master Awards

Candidates should demonstrate both academic competence and an ability to make a significant contribution to the life of the School in areas a such as Art and DT. Applicants will have an interview for which they should bring a portfolio of their work and achievements.

For Art, candidates should bring a practical portfolio of art work, which has been completed over the past two years. The portfolio should include approximately 10 pieces of work, five of which should be observational drawings, the rest should display and ability to work with a range of materials, techniques and processes.  Examples can be both 2D and 3D.  Ideally, candidates should also bring a sketch book which documents developmental work.

During the assessment, candidates will take part in an observational drawing exercise and a visual and conceptual analysis task.

Each applicant will also have an interview with the Director of Art, Victoria Rose, during which they will be asked to discuss their creative work, inspirations, skills and ambitions.

For DT,  candidates should be able to show evidence of significant interest and engagement in design and making related activities beyond the classroom. The evidence of this interest should be project based and can be from a wide range of fields.

Candidates will have an interview with the Head of DT, Alun Pickford and will be asked to discuss; the use of materials and manufacturing processes in relation to specific products and applications as well as sustainable design

Candidates would be expected to bring a portfolio of work, both 2D and 3D, to discuss at interview. The work should demonstrate the quality of the applicant's design ability (development of designs through iteration), communication skills (annotations that clarify the thought process) and, graphics ability (sketching and drawing techniques).
