Fluency in English

In order to cope with both the academic and social demands of being at Dauntsey's, pupils whose first language is not English should have good spoken and written English. Ability in written English is tested as part of the entrance selection process and guidelines are given below. In addition, each pupil will be interviewed by an appropriate senior member of the academic staff who will assess their spoken English.

Guidelines for admissions and ability levels in English - Sixth Form, 16+ (Year 12)

Pupils must have an equivalent of IELTS level 5.5—6 or a pass at the Cambridge University First Certificate. This is evidenced either through the IELTS qualification or through our own EAL paper and appropriate examinations and interview. In addition to an EAL paper, prospective pupils will sit a Maths and a General Paper.

For 2017 entry, registration should be made by 19 October 2016. Examinations take place at agents offices, candidates current school or British Council offices in early November. All shortlisted applicants are interviewed, either in person or via Skype.

At all stages pupils receive the appropriate level of individual support from experienced EAL teaching staff. Sixth Form students are prepared for the IELTS examination, where a minimum of level 7 is required for entrance to top UK universities.
