General Studies Programme

The General Studies programme runs throughout the Lower Sixth. The overall aim of the programme is to encourage pupils to think about matters that are not normally covered by their academic studies.

All pupils will choose two taught modules - each module lasts for approximately one term. The choice is made from a broad range that may change from year to year. This year the courses are as follows:

  • A Taste of Psychology
  • Photography
  • American Studies
  • Cookery
  • Self defence and conflict resolution
  • Creative Writing
  • Current affairs
  • Film and Philosophy
  • First Aid
  • Computer Programming
  • Political Theory and International Relations
  • Law
  • Mandarin for Beginners
  • Money Management

Talks and more

There is also a series of talks given by people from outside the School. It is hoped that these talks will alert pupils to some of the possibilities of life beyond School. Study skills are also covered and some of the General Studies sessions are given over to careers advice and university applications. This will include a presentation on work experience, instruction in how to fill out a UCAS form and, in the Upper Sixth, interview training.
