Academic Life
The Sixth Form is a very vibrant area of the School, with some 260 pupils in Years 12/13 enjoying the challenges of a broad-based, flexible curriculum. The promotion of self-study skills and independent learning is central to the teaching and learning strategy, preparing pupils for Higher Education courses and the world of work.
Twenty-two subjects are offered at both AS-level and A-level. Pupils have an unrestricted choice of subjects, allowing breadth or specialisation as appropriate. In the Lower Sixth pupils study four subjects at AS-level, most of which consist of two modules. Most pupils continue with three of their choices to A2-level in the Upper Sixth, normally studying a further two or three modules in each subject. Every year, some pupils elect to continue with all four subjects.
The subjects available are:
| Art and Design | German |
| Biology | History |
| Business Studies | Latin |
| Chemistry | Mathematics |
| Classics | Further Mathematics |
| Design and Technology | Music |
| Drama and Theatre Studies | Music Technology |
| Economics | Physical Education |
| English Literature | Physics |
| French | Religion, Philosophy & Ethics |
| Geography | Spanish |
The popular General Studies programme adds breadth and enrichment to individual study programmes and an AS-level course in Critical Thinking is available for high-achieving, academically ambitious pupils. In addition to timetable lessons many pupils participate in the wide range of academic clubs and societies and departments often organise trips, lectures and workshops, adding enrichment to the academic timetable.
