General Studies

The General Studies programme runs throughout the Lower Sixth year. The overall aim of the programme is to encourage students to think about matters that are not normally covered by their academic studies.

There is a General Studies AS-level examination; entry is optional and some students may find it useful to sit the papers.

All pupils will choose two taught modules - each module lasts for approximately one term. The choice is made from a broad range that may change from year to year. This year the courses are as follows:

  • A Taste of Psychology
  • Arabic Language, Islam and Middle Eastern Culture
  • Cello from Scratch
  • Cookery
  • Critical Thinking
  • Creative Writing
  • Dance
  • Film and Philosophy
  • First Aid
  • Introduction to Cubase
  • Introduction to Media Studies
  • Italian for Beginners
  • Mandarin for Beginners
  • Madness in Art
  • Money Management
  • Self Defence
  • Ukulele Orchestra

Critical Thinking can be developed into an AS examination.

There is also a series of talks and lectures given by people from outside the School. It is hoped that these talks will alert students to some of the possibilities of life beyond School.

A part of the General Studies programme covers study skills.

Some of the General Studies sessions are given over to careers advice and University applications. This will include a presentation on work experience, instruction in how to fill out a UCAS form and, in the Upper Sixth, interview training.
