Chemistry Technician / Apprentice

A Chemistry Technician is required to join the school with immediate effect.

The successful applicant will be responsible to the Head of Chemistry and Senior Technician, and will be required to provide support to the teaching staff in the Chemistry Department, as well as having specific responsibility for the day to day running of the Chemistry laboratories.

Experience of laboratory work and chemical handling is desirable but there is an opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship in conjunction with Wiltshire College and train on the job. The required minimum qualifications to do so are GCSE grade C in Chemistry or Combined Science as well as in Maths and English.

Alternatively, there is an opportunity for a qualified technician to join the school.

Chemistry Technician Job Description

Dauntsey’s Chemistry department is one of the largest departments in the school. There are four full time dedicated staff along with three staff who do not work a full timetable. We have five laboratories and two prep rooms as well as a substantial chemical store. We teach Chemistry across all year groups in the school and are the second most popular choice at A-level.

We are seeking to appoint a technician who can demonstrate prior experience in necessary technical skills, as listed in the key responsibilities below. The successful candidate will have had prior experience in a scientific environment as well as maintaining high standards in punctuality and personal appearance.

The Chemistry Technician reports to the Senior Chemistry Technician, Head of Chemistry and Head of Science. Their main role is to support the delivery of lessons, as directed by the teaching staff and the Senior Technician whilst maintaining appropriate awareness of health and safety in the workplace, as directed by the Science and Chemistry department policies, under the advice of CLEAPSS.

The role for a suitably qualified candidate will entail working from 1:00 – 5:30 Monday to Friday and from 8:00 – 1:00 on a Saturday. Some of this time will be spent working with the Senior Technician, but a significant proportion of this time will be spent working on your own.

The key areas of responsibility are, but not limited to :

  1. Setting up, dismantling and cleaning apparatus used in classroom teaching (a dishwasher is provided for glassware).
  2. Making up and keeping stocks of solutions and other substances.
  3. Carrying out stocktaking, ordering apparatus and chemicals, and keeping records of such. Records are mostly kept on computer.
  4. Maintaining and general supervision of the laboratories to ensure that all services operate efficiently and safely, and drawing any deficiencies to the attention of the Senior Technician, Head of Chemistry or the Maintenance Staff. Detailed checks are carried out on a half-termly basis.
  5. Covering books, and recording the issue of textbooks and revision files.
  6. Dealing with charges to pupil accounts (e.g. books or breakages) and with petty cash.
  7. Labelling and organising teaching resources. Preparing lists, timetables and order sheets from computer files.
  8. Setting up computer assisted demonstrations.
  9. Ordering stationery and maintaining stocks.
  10. Simple servicing and mending of equipment
  11. Monitoring fume cupboard operation.
  12. Partaking in training, as appropriate.
  13. Carrying out other duties as the Head of Department may from time to time require.

Apprenticeship Chemistry Technician Job Description

Dauntsey’s Chemistry department is one of the largest departments in the school. There are four full time dedicated staff along with three staff who do not work a full timetable. We have five laboratories and two prep rooms as well as a substantial chemical store. We teach Chemistry across all year groups in the school and are the second most popular choice at A-level.

We are seeking to appoint a technician who is willing to take on the apprentice role, who has an interest in learning the skills required to be successful in this field. We would ask that a suitable candidate has some grounding in Sciences at GCSE level and can demonstrate the enthusiasm for continuing their learning with us through day to day instruction and an NVQ qualification through Wiltshire College.

The Chemistry Technician reports to the Senior Chemistry Technician, Head of Chemistry and Head of Science. Their main role is to support the delivery of lessons, as directed by the teaching staff and the Senior Technician whilst maintaining appropriate awareness of health and safety in the workplace, as directed by the Science and Chemistry department policies, under the advice of CLEAPPS.

As an apprentice technician, it will be expected that you have an interest in the chemical world and that you are prepared to undergo appropriate NVQ training, provided by Wiltshire College on a day-release scheme. The hours of work will be 9:00am to 4:30pm during the week and 8:00am to 1:00pm on a Saturday. Your time will be spent working alongside the Senior Chemistry Technician who will provide on the job training in all the necessary skills required to assist with the day to day running of the Chemistry department.

You will be working towards achieving the following key areas of responsibility :
