Jessica

What did you like about Dauntsey’s when you first visited?
I joined Dauntsey's because my brother came here two years before me. He really enjoyed Dauntsey's and found all the people very friendly and kind, so my parents knew that I would like the School too.
What is your favourite subject at School and why?
I really like chemistry and study it as one of my A levels. The practicals in class are great and the equipment that we get to work with is amazing. The teachers in the Chemistry Department, like other departments, are really eager to help and have clinics and revision sessions. They also let me help out with some of the younger students, which deepens both my learning and theirs, which is really cool.
What clubs or sports do you do? What do you enjoy about them?
I do lots of clubs and really like them all. I love the choir, especially Dauntsey's Female Voices, because, although we have competed nationally and want to be the best we can, there is a relaxed, casual atmosphere, which has meant I have become really good friends with the other girls and we like spending time together.
Senior choir is also great, because there is a huge age range, which means I get to interact with some of the Lower School pupils who I may not see otherwise. Helping them to sing and enjoy singing is awesome.
What is your favourite book?
My favourite book is ‘The Lie Tree’ by Francis Hardinge. I really like this book as it not only makes reference to what I want to study at university, natural sciences, but I really empathise with the characters as they all have a thirst for knowledge and work really hard to find scientific truth. Obviously, the author works in some thrilling and tension-filled moments that are really exciting for the reader, but the fundamental meaning of the book and the depth of the message is what makes it my absolute favourite.
Thanks to the Reading Ambassadors Group at School, I actually got to meet Francis Hardinge and ask her questions about her books and how she creates these amazing story lines. It was really cool, because she was so nice and the whole situation was quite informal, so I got to enjoy talking to her person-to-person.

Octavia
Octavia is a day girl in the Lower Sixth at Dauntsey’s
What did you like about Dauntsey’s when you first visited?
I came to Dauntsey's because it is very close to where I live so it was the most practical option, but I love it here. I have made some amazing friends during my six years here and the School has so much on offer and encourages everyone to take part. Dauntsey's has definitely pushed me out of my comfort-zone, thanks to things such as the Lower School Dance Show and the Moonrakers activities. People generally come out more confident and grateful because they achieved something they wouldn't have necessarily done before. The team spirit and sense of community at Dauntsey's was very attractive to me when looking around the School for the first time, it is a very friendly environment.
What subjects do you study?
For my A-Levels I do History, Business Studies, DT and an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). None of my subjects directly link with each other but I enjoy all of them and decided to do subjects that I enjoy because I'm not sure what I want to do in the future.
What has been your highlight of Sixth Form at Dauntsey’s so far?
So far in the Sixth Form I have loved the freedom and trust that we are given. The sports on offer at Dauntsey's is also incredible as there are so many options available. It can really help everyone develop their leadership and teamworking skills which are key traits of being a Dauntsey's student. I have also really enjoyed the ‘17 Club’ parties and the Valentine’s and Summer Balls that are run for the Sixth Form - they're always really good fun.
What would you say to someone just entering the Sixth Form?
Make the most of the opportunities Dauntsey’s offers you. It doesn't really matter what area you do best in (whether it be sports, music, drama, art, etc.) there will always be something available to you. I would also advise doing something that you wouldn't normally want to do and get involved with as much as possible. Being at Dauntsey's, you tend to have pretty long and busy schedules so you have to be able to - or learn to - manage your time effectively so that you can make the most of it whilst also staying on top of your work.
What is your favourite place on earth and why?
My favourite place on earth would have to be Bali in Indonesia because it is such a beautiful and eye-opening place. I lived there for a couple of years when growing up and I loved the culture and the school I was at. It was inspirational because it was made entirely of bamboo and focused on global awareness and the environment. I met all kinds of fascinating people when I was there and made some incredible friends.

Why did you decide to come to Dauntsey’s, and what did you like about the school when you first visited?
My parents saw the School before I did, and they came back delighted by what Dauntsey’s had to offer; its friendly community and calm atmosphere. When I came, I knew exactly what they meant. I had a real feeling of social cohesion, and that it was a genuinely happy place, which is rare for a school to be. I loved the aspects outside of the classroom – the drama, music and sport, but it was clear that the academic staff were lovely too.
What would you say to someone just entering the Sixth Form?
Don’t panic about ‘interrupting’ friendships or that the social groups are already settled. Dauntsey’s students aren’t like that: they’re open, friendly and always happy to help and lots of my friends are students who joined in the sixth form.
Enjoy the first year whilst it lasts, as work does become tougher as the year goes on.
Make the most of every opportunity that is given to you. This may sounds like a cliché but it honestly is one of the best pieces of advice I have been given, especially in an environment like Dauntsey’s.

Why did you decide to come to Dauntsey’s, and what did you like about the school when you first visited?
I decided to come to Dauntsey’s for the grounding it provided. Having never been in one school for more than three years prior to that, I had moved away from many friends. Boarding at Daunstey’s has been a great environment for me to make lasting friendships
What would you say to someone just entering the Sixth Form?
Try and get a good balance of work and relaxation. You don’t want to stress yourself out by doing too much work but at the same time you need to make sure you stay on top of things in preparation for Upper Sixth. If nothing else I think you should also try and get involved in as many things as you can, make the most of the time you have in Lower Sixth because in the second year of Sixth Form you’ll be too busy!
What has been the highlight of your time in the Sixth Form so far?
My highlight was going to play rugby at Twickenham in the Schools Vase final against Samuel Whitbread Academy. Even though we lost, it was an incredible experience with loads of great mates. On top of that, I did a Jolie Brise cruise to Iceland which was awe-inspiring, and I would do something like that again in a heartbeat.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be, and why?
If I had a superpower it would be the ability to fly because then it wouldn’t take as long for me to get from class to class, and I could go home on the weekends really easily.
Oli
Oli is in the Upper Sixth, in Fitzmaurice House. He is studying Biology, Chemistry and Drama A-levels.
Why did you decide to come to Dauntsey’s, and what did you like about the school when you first visited?
I first came to Dauntsey’s to watch the musical Chicago. My older brother had helped do the lighting for the show. I was immediately amazed by the quality of the production both from a performance and technical perspective.
What would you say to someone just entering the Sixth Form?
I would say that Dauntsey’s offers so many opportunities outside of the classroom for everyone to take part in whether that be sport, music, art, drama, etc. If something takes your interest absolutely give it a go - especially when you are in the Lower Sixth when you have a bit more time.
What has been the highlight of your time in the Sixth Form so far?
Last year’s musical Our House has got to be a massive highlight for me. I learnt a lot from it and taking part was especially fun seeing as I was one the older members of the cast. It was enjoyable but, in many ways, really challenging and this made completing the performances successfully even more rewarding.
What is your favourite place on earth, and why?
My favourite place on earth is my village. I have lived there all my life and it’s my base despite my parents living abroad. I think the reason I love it so much is because most of the time I am there my family is there too which is nice because I don’t see them every day.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be, and why?
If I could have a superpower it would be to freeze time so that I can stay in bed longer and do my prep at the last minute!
Sophie
Sophie is in the Upper Sixth, in Evans House. She is studying Biology Chemistry and Spanish A-levels and an EPQ.
Why did you decide to come to Dauntsey’s, and what did you like about the school when you first visited?
There was never any doubt as to whether Dauntsey’s was right for me. I decided at quite a young age that this is where I wanted to come as I regularly visited my four older siblings during their time here.
I was drawn to the range of opportunities that I had seen them have at the School such as being involved in music or drama, playing in sports teams at a high standard, and other activities which made the school unique, like sailing on the Jolie Brise.
What would you say to someone just entering the Sixth Form?
As someone who worries a lot themselves, I would tell them anyone joining the Sixth Form that, despite having a potentially stressful and anxious two years ahead, everything will be OK.
Dauntsey’s is a really supportive and kind community and there is always someone who can help you. I would also say, although academic work is important, not to waste the extra-curricular opportunities that the School offers because the balance between work and having a social life is so important. During a hectic year, you really learn to appreciate down time!
What has been the highlight of your time in the Sixth Form so far?
The highlight has probably been enjoying the benefits of reaching the top of the School. I can remember walking past the 17 Club in the Lower School or hearing about all the balls and parties during the year and not being able to wait until I could join in with those things.
I’ve also developed really solid friendships with people that I have known (and in some cases lived with!) for the last six years and so being able to experience Sixth Form together does mean something.
What is your favourite place on earth, and why?
One of my favourite places on earth would have to be my godparents’ kitchen. As they are chefs, it’s packed full of really vivid memories of tastes, smells and sensations that take me back to when I was really little... before I knew the stress of A-levels!
Here at Dauntsey’s there is time and space to try new things, make new friends and challenge yourself. I have certainly done things I never thought I could do.margaret, sixth form pupil
