Spanish

Pupils at Dauntsey's enjoy the opportunity of learning Spanish from the First Form. After the initial carousel system, where French, German, Latin and Spanish are studied, pupils choose to continue with two languages in the Second and Third Forms.

Throughout the Lower School pupils have three lessons a week. Pupils may then choose to study for the Edexcel IGCSE in Spanish in the Fourth and Fifth Forms; throughout these two years’ pupils have two double lessons a week and additional conversation lessons with our Spanish language assistant. During the Fourth and Fifth Form pupils also have the opportunity to take part in a trip to a language school in Granada in the south of Spain. This trip provides students with a great opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of Spain. The 6th form regularly help the department to stage cultural events for the Lower School.

Pupils who chose to continue with A level Spanish follow the new AQA A level course which provides exciting and challenging units of study, focussing not only on the language but also on the culture of Spain and South America. In addition to the core curriculum, pupils are exposed to Spanish and Latin American films, television, literature and current affairs, with regular use of current Spanish and Latin American newspaper articles, news and documentary programmes. During their A Level studies students once again have the opportunity to join the trip to a language school in Spain, where they stay with a host family and study at a language school, and participate in a number of interesting trips in the local area. Our pupils also go on a biennial trip to Barcelona or Seville. Those who continue to study Spanish at Dauntsey's in the Sixth Form will leave the School with the ability to communicate in Spanish, read widely in the language, and will share with us a passion for Hispanic culture; many of our students currently pursue their passion by travelling to Latin America in their gap year.

The Spanish Department is made up of four full-time members of staff, a language assistant, plus further members of staff who join us from other departments.
